Water, energy and agriculture systems are tightly linked. Water is needed for food production as well as to extract energy and power generation. Energy is needed to pump groundwater and transport surface water to irrigate crops. Food production is increasingly being strained in search for green energy. Integrated approach to co-optimize water, energy and food resources is what we need.
In a collaborative project with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and Meta Meta, Resourcematics has quantified water use for agriculture (e.g. food, feed, and fiber crops), energy use for groundwater pumping; energy use for irrigation; and energy use for fertilizer use in agriculture.
